Mercedes G450d Review-The Mercedes G-Class has always been an icon that couldn’t care less about automotive trends or fleeting design fads. Sleek aerodynamics? No thanks. Soft-close doors? Not its style. This is the G-Wagon—a symbol of rugged strength and timeless design.

And just when diesel engines seem to be falling out of favor, Mercedes has done the unthinkable—introduced its most powerful diesel yet: the G450d.

Mercedes G450d Review- A New Member of the G-Class Family
The G450d joins the G-Class lineup in India alongside the ferocious AMG G63 and the all-electric G580. It’s technically the most “affordable” G-Class variant, though that’s a relative term—with prices starting around ₹2.9 crore (ex-showroom).
To put that in perspective, the G350d, launched just six years ago, was priced at ₹1.5 crore. Inflation—or perhaps prestige—has its price.

The facelifted G450d stands out with a four-slat chrome grille, silver-accented bumpers, and 20-inch twin five-spoke alloy wheels. The rear gets a chrome-finished spare wheel cover, completing the luxury-off-roader look. Color options include the usual blacks, whites, and silvers, but Mercedes also offers striking hues like Rubilite Red Metallic, Emerald Green, and Nautical Blue.

Interior Comfort: Climb Up to Luxury – Getting inside the G-Class is literally a climb, but once you’re in, you sit high above traffic with a commanding view of the road. The seats pamper you with heating, ventilation, and massage functions, ensuring comfort on any terrain.

The familiar upright dashboard and flat glasshouse retain that signature G-Class vibe. New additions include touchscreen functionality—a first for the G-Wagon—along with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 360-degree camera, and a transparent bonnet view that’s invaluable off-road.

The infotainment system features off-road-themed digital displays, showcasing data like suspension travel, tire pressure, temperature, differential locks, and even satellite positioning. There’s also an augmented reality navigation system, overlaying turn-by-turn directions directly onto the live camera feed—very futuristic.

Despite the new tech, Mercedes wisely keeps physical buttons for key functions like climate control and differential locks. You’ll find controls for the front, center, and rear differential locks, as well as a low-range gear selector, right on the center console.

Rear Cabin and Practicality
Rear passengers might find entry a bit less than graceful, thanks to the tall step and narrow door opening. Space is adequate but not extravagant for a car in this price bracket. Still, the high seating position and panoramic view add to the sense of occasion.

Rear comfort features include seat heating, dedicated climate control, AC vents, and USB-C ports—though there’s no seat ventilation or sunblind adjustment. The side-hinged tailgate and high floor make loading heavy luggage tricky, but cargo capacity remains generous.

Engine & Performance: Diesel Power, Reinvented
Under the hood lies a 2,989cc straight-six turbo-diesel engine, familiar from the G350d and G400d, but now tuned to produce 367 hp and 750 Nm of torque. That’s a big step up from the older versions, and it shows.

The G450d rockets from 0–100 km/h in just 6.79 seconds, remarkable for a near 2.5-ton SUV. The engine’s character changes as you push it—quiet and refined at low RPMs, but growling with authority when revved higher.
The 9-speed automatic transmission handles the power delivery smoothly, while the 48V mild-hybrid system adds electric assist during acceleration and keeps the AC compressor running even when the engine is off at stoplights.
Fuel efficiency remains in the high single-digit km/l range, which, while not economical, is acceptable for such a machine.
Ride, Handling, and Off-Road Ability
The latest G-Class benefits from a suspension upgrade, improving overall comfort and stability. While the steering remains heavy and deliberate, it suits the SUV’s imposing nature.
It’s not built for sharp cornering or nimble handling—think of it more as a rolling fortress than a sports SUV.

However, off the tarmac, the G450d is unstoppable. Its body-on-frame construction, low-range gearbox, and triple differential locks make it a true off-road weapon. Few luxury SUVs can match its ability to conquer rough trails, steep inclines, and rocky terrain.

Price & Verdict: A Legend That Still Commands Respect
At ₹2.9 crore, the Mercedes G450d isn’t rational—it’s emotional. You could get a Toyota Land Cruiser 300 or Lexus LX500d for less, both offering more comfort and similar off-road capability. And with diesel regulations tightening in major Indian cities, resale value might take a hit.

But logic doesn’t buy a G-Class—passion does.
The G450d embodies old-school toughness blended with modern-day tech. It’s a machine that commands attention, respect, and maybe a little envy wherever it goes.
Because at the end of the day, those who want a G-Wagon… get a G-Wagon.
